Under Pressure

With only 5 days on site to go, the pressure is mounting. Can we complete the survey and what key dredges can we do? Should we consider another Sentry survey? It will take about 2 days to complete the survey below. What should we do in those other 2 or so days?

Where are we now? The completed survey as of today. In the background is the bathymetry collected during our expedition and the bathymetry as derived from satellite gravity.

Today we continued our multibeam survey and then broke off to launch Sentry on the volcanic axis of the ridge around lunch time. Sentry will (hopefully) investigate the interplay of magmatism and extrusion of mantle peridotite from the axial valley. We can’t wait to see the map Sentry produces tomorrow.. Once Sentry had been launched, we dredged the volcanic axis, but alas came up with an empty dredge. We are currently trying again.

Below is a picture of Sentry artist Justin Fujii decorating Sentry before the dive. The tradition is to decorate Sentry for the last dive of each expedition. Can you recognize Sentry’s disguise?
